02/03/2004: Nauru Nauru

Children Drugged
from Herald Sun (Melbourne, AUS)

MANY child asylum seekers detained on Nauru were taking medication for depression and anxiety, Australian Democrats leader Andrew Bartlett said yesterday.

Senator Bartlett, who visited the Pacific island for four days late last month, said mental illness was the biggest problem for the 284 asylum-seekers, including 93 children.

"That's a direct consequence of our government's insistence on keeping them there without any hope," he said.

"It's just unaccept able. We've got to start looking for solutions."
