BC, BU in Beanpot final

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston College Eagles earned themselves a rematch with Boston University in the Beanpot finals.

Boston College defeated Harvard 4-1, and two-time defending champion Boston University beat Northeastern 5-2 in the 52nd annual Beanpot semifinals Monday night, as the Eagles and the Terriers advanced to face each other in the title game for the fourth time in five years.

Boston College (20-3-3) has won 14 of their last 15 games, and the team is 2-0 against the Terriers this season. But BC has lost 14 of its last 15 games to Boston University in Beanpot play, including a 3-2 defeat in the 2003 title game.

The Terriers (8-10-6) have captured eight of the last nine Beanpot titles, and advanced to the championship game for the 10th straight year and the 20th time in the past 21 season.

''It's a great matchup. Hats off to the Terriers. They've played very well in the Beanpot,'' said Boston College coach Jerry York. ''But our goal is to win one.''

Matti Kaltiainen made 21 saves and four different players scored to lead Boston College in the nightcap.

Patrick Eaves gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 4:25 of the first period with his third career Beanpot goal. Ned Havern pushed Boston College's lead to 2-0 at 11:25 of the first on a shot that ricocheted off the glass behind the Harvard net and hit Crimson goalie Dov Grumet-Morris, who inadvertently knocked the puck in.

''When you play very, very well and you get two breaks like that, it certainly is a deciding factor in the game. It's a difficult way for Harvard to start,'' York said.

Justin Dziama scored his second goal of the season 3:01 into the second period to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Harvard got on the board at 18:11 of the second on Charlie Johnson's seventh goal of the season, a power play goal. Boston College's Tony Voce put the game out of reach with a power play goal, his 18th goal of the season, at 18:54 of the third.

Harvard (8-11-2) suffered its sixth straight first-round loss.

In the opener, Sean Fields made 36 saves and Jekabs Redlihs and Brian McConnell each scored second-period goals to lead the Terriers' 10th straight win over the Huskies in the Beanpot.

Redlihs got the game-winner for Boston on a wraparound goal 57 seconds into the second period, as the puck bounced softly off of Keni Gibson's pads and trickled into the net to put the Terriers ahead 3-2. Boston pushed its lead to 4-2 at 18:26 of the second thanks to a power play goal from McConnell.

''We don't play in consolation games,'' said Parker. ''There's a lot at stake in this game. To be sneaking into the building to play the consolation game is real tough. We're fortunate we haven't had to do it too often.''

Eric Ortlip and Yale Lewis scored for Northeastern (7-13-4), which will face Harvard in the consolation game next Monday at 5 p.m. The title game will follow at 8 p.m.

''Come Beanpot time, BU's always jacked up to play. We do have confidence because of our past history,'' Fields said. ''But games aren't played on paper, so we knew we had to go out and play hard.''

NOTES: ''Rhett,'' the Boston University mascot, drew a large cheer from the crowd between periods by skating around the ice in a Tom Brady jersey. ... Five of Northeastern's seven wins against the Terriers in the Beanpot came in the 1980s, when it won the title four times. ... The Crimson are one loss shy of tying the program's longest championship game drought. Harvard lost seven straight first-round games from 1982 to 1988. ... Boston College improved to 18-11-1 at the FleetCenter.

By the way, we prefer the term "BU Invitational Tournament". But we like to defer to history.
