03/31/2006: :: Stuff That Doesn't Suck

Gran Marcha A Huge Success
from LA Times

The Gran Marcha is what people are calling the protest last Satuday in Downtown LA which brought 500,000 peaceful demonstrators to rally against HR 4437. Sporadic walkouts have occurred at high schools across California, and other demonstrations have taken place across the US. Although it appeared to spring out of thin air to some, many of the marchers heard about it on Spanish TV and radio (like the Piolin show), and the high school students spread the word through MySpace.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the young Hispanic people (and everybody else) who exercised their right to free speech, protested peacefully, and forced the Senate to change some of the more onerous provisions of HR 4437. These people were sufficiently motivated by a cause to protest, and that is great. Maybe all the white kids who complain about Bush, Jr. or how abortion rights are being restricted should stop playing Play Station and find a way to get involved in the political process.
